Initiation (as stage)

The point at which someone who has been welcomed and oriented steps in and makes the Pledge.

A narrow, specific thing, and the narrowness is deliberate. Initiation in the wider corpus means passage into new realms of responsibility and authority, and recurs across a life. Initiation as a stage of the Arc means one crossing: the moment a person who has been greeted, oriented, and given time stops being someone considering the Game and becomes someone playing it.

What happens there is the Pledge — the first commitment: the time, energy, attention, and contribution a person will give for the season ahead. Said in their own words, where others can hear it. Nothing before this asks it of them, which is the load-bearing fact: every lesson, page, and conversation prior to Initiation is a gift with no hook in it, and the deck says so on its own face. A commitment extracted before a person understood what they were joining is not a commitment; it is a capture.

Its second load-bearing property is that it is witnessed. A yes said where others can hear it binds differently from one said privately — not because anyone will enforce it, but because the Game runs on a word given and kept, and a word given to no one is hard to keep. Consent is real here precisely because refusal was equally available and equally respected; silence is never a yes, and agreement can be withdrawn.

In the Game it sits between welcome and the first Turn. A person is welcomed at the door, oriented into the Story and the Game, and then — when they choose, not when a schedule says — they step in, pledge what they will give, and take their place at a table. In the wider walk it corresponds to the choice at The Threshold (of the Path) and to The Decision that follows the whisper.
