The Pledge
The first Commitment: what you will give for the season ahead, said before the first Quest.
The Pledge is where a yes becomes a quantity. Having answered The Invitation, a player says what they will contribute for the coming season: their time, energy, and attention each week; a reciprocal contribution of treasure, of any amount, flowing to the commons; and the gifts, capacities, and crafts they bring to the table. It is the commitment all the others stand on, and it is made at Initiation (as stage) — before the first gathering, not after a few seasons of watching.
It is load-bearing because it makes the body visible to itself. A Commitment tells a table what one week holds; the gathered Pledges tell the body what the season holds, so that it can plan, provision, and choose Quests into the future rather than hoping in the dark. The Score says what has flowed; the Pledges say what is coming.
How it is played. Say it at your gathering, in your own words, and write it where your Cell keeps its record. Name a real weekly figure rather than a generous one — a baseline of about a tenth of a working week is the stated starting measure, and a pledge that is quietly missed teaches the table not to trust pledges. It is living: update it whenever your season of life changes, and renew it at each turning, because freshly chosen beats silently assumed. And it is held like every other word in the Game: say what you will give; give what you said; learn from the difference. No lesson and no agent asks it of you; it is asked by people, at a table.
