Navigation

Knowing where you are, where you are going, and choosing the next leg — the discipline of moving from present suffering and dysfunction toward the Goal.

Navigation has three parts and a sailor's honesty about all of them. A destination: The Goal, fixed, not chosen by us. A position: where we actually are, read from what is true rather than what was planned — which is what Sensemaking is for. And a leg: the next stretch, chosen because it moves the position toward the destination. A navigation issue is anything that makes any of the three unclear, and it is treated as work rather than as mood.

It is load-bearing because a body can be busy, disciplined and lost. The instruments of the rest of this domain are navigation instruments: Milestone gives fixed points to steer by, Float and Critical Path say which way the current runs, The Record is the log, and the compass question is the bearing taken before every move. Without a position honestly read, every one of them computes confidently about a place the body is not.

It is done together and often. A dashboard is only as good as the readings put into it; a reading taken once a season is a memory. The weekly hour exists partly for this: a few honest lines on where we are before anything is decided about where to go next.
