The All (the reconciliation)

Attending to a few must never conflict with the imperative to extend boundless love to All — and the reconciliation is that the few are served in service of All.

Three chapters of counsel say: concentrate. Know a few things deeply, find the fifth that carries the rest, put your capacity where it converts (A Few, The 20%). That counsel has a moral shadow, and this chapter is where the canon turns and looks straight at it. If you concentrate on a few people, a few places, a few problems — what exactly have you said about everyone else?

The shadow is not imaginary. Every doctrine of focus has been used to justify a circle of concern with a fence around it, and the fence always has the same defence: we are being effective. So the paradox is named rather than softened. Concentration is necessary, because attention is finite and a love that attends to nothing in particular attends to nothing (Spending Attention, Love). Boundless love is also necessary, and is not a feeling but an obligation that extends past any circle (All, Omniconsideration, Universal Rights).

The resolution offered is a single test, and it is a test of direction rather than of scope: is our work with the few entirely in service of All? Not partly. Not eventually. The few are attended to because that is how finite beings actually reach anything, and the reaching is aimed outward from the start. Held that way, concentration is a method and never a boundary (The Goal, Throughput, Co-Creating Heaven).

The test is usable, which is the point of stating it so plainly. It fails the moment a body's advantage becomes the reason for its focus rather than a by-product of it; when what is learned in the few stops travelling outward (Knowledge as commons, Share the Stories); when the boundary that made the work possible becomes the thing being defended (Selectively Permeable Membrane, Guard the Membrane, Ideological Capture). Each of those is the same failure at a different scale, and each is caught by the same question (The compass question).
