Selectively Permeable Membrane

A conscious boundary that filters exchange while honouring sovereignty — consent at the door, and the freedom to leave.

Every association births four things, and this is one of them: a Domain of responsibility and authority, a membrane around it, a Field of Agreements within it, and a Commons it tends. The membrane is the boundary that makes the other three possible, because a domain with no edge is not a domain and a commons with no edge is a thing being drained.

The word membrane rather than wall is doing the work. A wall protects by stopping exchange, and a body behind one starves. A living cell survives because its boundary is selective: it chooses what comes in and what goes out, continuously, and that choosing is what keeps it alive rather than what isolates it. A membrane breathes.

Two rules make it just rather than merely defensive. Consent at the door: the terms are read before anyone is inside, agreement is given in a person's own words, silence is never a yes, and nobody is governed who has not agreed. The freedom to leave: anyone may go at any time, in peace, and nothing is erased behind them. Those two together are what distinguish a membrane from a trap, and they are non-negotiable precisely because everything else about the body can be negotiated.

What crosses is deliberately narrow — requests, offers, and commitments, never a task assigned across a line by someone with no standing to assign it. That narrowness is not coldness; it is what lets sovereign bodies work closely without either of them absorbing the other.

A Cell decides its membrane on purpose in its first season: who is in, what is visible, what is private, what is asked of a newcomer, and how someone leaves well.
