The True Myth

A story that is also true — mythic in form, so it can be carried and remembered, and factual in reference, so it can be checked.

Ordinary usage puts myth and truth in opposition, and the opposition is a modern mistake. A myth is a symbolic narrative that encodes deep pattern; it is the form in which a people keeps what matters most, because a pattern in narrative survives centuries that an argument does not. Calling something a true myth claims both halves at once: that it works the way myth works, and that it refers to what actually happened and is happening. Unlike a fictional universe, this one maps onto real history, real systems, and real beings, and every person alive is already a character in it.

It is load-bearing because it names what this whole corpus is attempting and therefore what could go wrong with it. The Story of LIØNSBERG is told in mythic register — Caves, Wilderness, Promised Land, the long night, the passing of a flame — while making claims about a present collapse and a present possibility. Held rightly, the register is what lets the Story be carried by someone with no theory and no training. Held wrongly, the register becomes a licence: a myth cannot be falsified, and a movement that has stopped being checkable has stopped being safe.

The canon's own guard is the myth's explicit humility. The name was chosen, and the myth was built consciously, so that the highest level of the body would exist as an idea rather than as any institution that could be captured, bought, or ordered. And the disciplines around it are unusually sharp: truth to ØNE, errors to us; LIØNSBERG Is A Prototype, Not The Eternal Essence; the Story that can be told is not THE Story.

In play the test is simple and should be applied often. Which parts of the telling are load-bearing narrative, and which are claims about the world? Say which is which. A Cell that can tell the Story and also say plainly what it does not know has kept both halves of true myth intact.
