Anger

The body's report that something is wrong — usually that a boundary has been crossed or a wrong is being done. Four states along one spectrum: anger, fury, sacred anger, hatred.

Anger is the signal itself: this is not right. Read accurately it is among the most useful emotions a Sovereign has, because it points precisely at a violation the mind may not yet have named. Fury is anger at full intensity — enormous energy, useful when channelled and destructive when it drives. The canon names the move as channelling rather than venting or swallowing. Sacred anger is fury held in Right Relationship: aimed at the wrong rather than at the person, proportionate, and released when it has done its work. Hatred is the state in which anger has fused with a being rather than a wrong, and it is named as the place the spectrum breaks — the canon's move for it is un-hating, which is a practice rather than a decision.

The two failures are familiar. Suppressed anger does not disappear; it seeps, and a Body whose members cannot say this is wrong will eventually discover what was never said. Anger obeyed rather than read produces harm the Sovereign then has to repair, and its usual target is the nearest person rather than the actual violation.

Anger is load-bearing for justice. A Body with no anger has no early warning that something is being done to someone; Meaningful Objection at the table is often anger that has been read accurately and translated into a sentence. Where force is ever in question the bindings are strict — minimum sufficient to restore Right Relationship, Restraint As The Refusal To Act, and the The Warrior's Vow. Fierce and powerful love, not fury in charge.
