Meaningful Objection

An objection names harm to what the body serves — and no proposal passes over one. Every member has the moral obligation to object when they reasonably believe the body will be unable to achieve its aim.

The word obligation is the surprising one and the important one. Objecting is not a right one may exercise if one feels strongly; it is a duty owed to the body. A member who sees a harm and stays quiet — for peace, for speed, for fear of being the difficult one — has withheld something the body needed, and the decision that follows is weaker for it.

Its discipline is in the framing. An objection addresses how the Proposal would harm the group's ability to advance toward its aim, in the context of the whole's progress toward The Goal. It is not I would prefer otherwise; preference lives inside Range Of Tolerance, and members are asked to use Wisdom to discern when something merely varies from what they would have chosen and when it genuinely threatens the aim.

This is what makes Consent rigorous rather than merely polite. Any member may stop progress and require a proposal improved before it advances — real power, held by each person, and therefore held carefully. A body where objections are common and cheap cannot move; a body where they are rare because they are unwelcome cannot see. The health of a circle can be read from how its last objection was received.

In play, this is the single question at the centre of the deciding round: does anyone have a reasoned, paramount objection? When one comes, the proposal is amended toward the objector's concern rather than argued past it.
