Having Difficult Conversations
The move most groups avoid, and the one that decides whether a Body lasts. The conversation is had while it is still small.
Difficulty is not the problem; delay is. A tension named in the week it appears is a conversation. The same tension named in the ninth month is a conflict, and by then it has recruited others, acquired a history, and become about character rather than about the thing. Most of what destroys a Circle was survivable when it was still awkward.
The shape is ordinary. Go directly to the person rather than around them. Name the specific thing rather than the pattern you have decided it proves. Say what you observed and what it cost, and then stop and listen — genuinely, with the possibility that the account you arrived with is wrong. Ask what you have not understood. Agree what changes, or agree that nothing does and say so plainly.
Where a direct conversation cannot resolve it, the Body has a ladder rather than a jump: direct resolution first, then help from the Circle, then elders for counsel, then whatever sits above (The Escalation Ladder). The ladder exists so that skipping steps is visible, and the first rung is always two people talking.
The preconditions are what make it possible rather than merely brave. A Body where cause is sought in the set-up rather than in the person (Zero Blame Environment). Where an objection is heard as service rather than disloyalty (Meaningful Objection). Where anyone may stop the line without penalty. Where people not in the room are spoken of as if they were present and might read it — which removes the corridor that difficult conversations otherwise get routed into.
And the floor beneath all of it: when a member is in danger, in body or in mind, the Circle acts first and records later.
