Apologizing

The named repair move: the wrong stated plainly by the one who did it, without defence, and followed by the change.

The shape is short and most of its difficulty is in what it omits. Name the specific thing done. Name what it cost the other, as they experienced it rather than as you would prefer it to be described. Say plainly that it was wrong. Say what will be different. And stop — no explanation appended, no context that would soften it, no if anyone was hurt, which returns the wrong to the wronged. An apology with a clause attached is a defence with an apology attached.

Then the change. An apology repeated without change becomes a way of continuing rather than repairing, and after the second or third the words themselves stop meaning anything in that Body.

It is load-bearing because a Body of sovereign beings who cannot apologize has only two other moves: pretend nothing happened, or leave. Both are expensive and both compound. The Pattern is what makes Forgiveness possible without requiring it — forgiveness belongs to the one who holds the debt and may never be demanded, but an honest apology is what most often lets it be given.

The Body's structures are what make apologizing survivable. Cause sought in the set-up rather than the person (Zero Blame Environment); the gap between promised and done treated as learning rather than fault (The gap); every defect received as a gift. Where admitting a miss is dangerous, nobody admits one, and the Body loses its ability to see itself.
