Family

The generative and formative unit of a people — the first vessel of love, learning, and transmission, and the first sovereignty a person ever belongs to.

Family is where a human being is formed before any school, guild, or council reaches them: where the first language is learned, the first agreement kept or broken, the first experience of being seen. It is a sovereignty in its own right, with its own domain, its own membrane, its own field of agreements and its own small commons — which is to say it is governed by the same Pattern as every other body, at the smallest scale where more than one person is bound.

It is load-bearing because Education As Transformation runs through it first. Form people, and people form organizations; and the forming begins here. A civilization that hollows out its families and then tries to repair the damage downstream through institutions is working against its own arithmetic. Family sovereignty means that no higher body may reach past a family into its formation without consent — the same Subsidiarity that governs every other scale.

In the Game, family is rarely the Cell and often overlaps it: a household may play together, and a Cell of three to thirteen may include a family within it, but a Cell is chosen by name and a family is largely given. The distinction matters at the door — nobody is governed who has not agreed, and a family member's yes is their own. In the System, family sits between The Sovereign and the Cell in the nesting of scales, carrying its own TimeEnergy, its own The Offering, and often the deepest of a person's commitments.

Much of what a family actually needs is named and unwritten: the standing of children in a body's decisions, the formation of the young in seven-year arcs, multi-adult parenting, the rites that mark a threshold in a household. These are honest gaps, not omissions — and a household that writes down what it actually practised is regrowing them.
