Three volumes, three facings of the same concept: what it is, how it is done, and when to reach for it.
The same concept appears in all three of the operational volumes, held differently in each, and knowing which facing you are writing is what stops the canon from saying the same thing three times in three places.
The Lexicon defines what: one canonical entry per term — definition, roots, function, the distinction from its distorted uses, its linkages. The Pattern Language articulates how: the operational wisdom of establishing and maintaining the thing in lived practice, as context, forces, solution, scale, examples, related patterns. The Playbook composes when: the riffs that invoke patterns in sequence for a recurring operational need, as context, sequence, improvisation, outcome.
The canon's own worked example is the selectively permeable membrane. The Lexicon says what a membrane is — a conscious boundary that filters exchange while honoring sovereignty. The Pattern Language says how one is established and kept, at each scale, with the forces that pull against it. The Playbook says when to invoke it: the play that establishes membranes, the play that forges a field of agreements, the play that connects one Circle to another, each reaching for the pattern at the moment that calls for it.
The three are interexistent. Each holds its facing canonically and the other two reference it; the cross-linking is rich and the wisdom is held once. A writer who finds themselves restating a definition inside a pattern, or a practice inside a definition, has found the seam and should link across it instead.
