Patterns of Death

The ways of being and doing that carry a life, a body, or a civilization downward — named so they can be recognised early and declined, rather than discovered at the bottom.

A pattern of death is not a catastrophe. It is an ordinary, repeatable way of acting that reliably drives toward the lowest potential: toward decay, sub-optimisation, failure, darkness, cold. Its counterpart is the pattern of life, which carries the same person or body toward fulfilment, warmth, and the fullness of what is in them. The canon's instruction is as plain as an instruction gets — choose the patterns of life; avoid the patterns of death (Spiraling Up · Spiraling Down · The Pattern That Works).

Naming them as patterns is the load-bearing move. It says the outcome came from a repeated shape rather than from bad character or bad luck, which means it can be seen coming, named without blame, and stepped out of (Pattern · The Pattern Governs, Not People · Zero Blame Environment · Every Defect Is A Gift). A person who believes they are failing because of who they are cannot change; a person who sees a pattern can.

They are also cumulative and quiet. Almost nothing collapses in a day; it drifts, one small tolerated thing at a time, and each step is defensible in isolation (Drift · Quick Fixes · We Do Not Tolerate · Communication Debt). Which is why the response is the ordinary rhythm rather than a rescue: the weekly look-back, the defect written down, the tension mended while it is small (Retrospective · Mend a Tension · Improvement log).

The Field carries the worked instances under two other names, and this page is their family. At the scale of a person or a Cell they are the Anti-Patterns; at the scale of an order they are the Systemic Failure Modes.
