The Meta Dragon

Go upstream to the thing that is making the dragons. Cut down the small ones forever and they keep arriving; the war is lost while every skirmish is won.

The image is a stream of small dragons pouring into the world and people rushing to fight them — organising, training, building better weapons, and losing ground. Then someone looks upstream and finds the mouth they are coming out of. As long as it breathes, they keep coming.

The principle: find the generator, address the generator, and the emanations stop on their own (Root Causes, Theory Of Constraints, Limiting Factor).

It works at every size. For a person, the same wound, the same trigger, the same sabotage met instance by instance — until the pattern is traced to its source and the instances stop (Healing, Trauma, Patterns of Death). For a Circle, the same conflict and the same losses, each with its own surface reason and one architecture underneath (Systemic Failure Modes, Gaps Not Yet Closed). For a body, capture after capture, until the design itself is changed (Structural Immunity, Ideological Capture). For a civilisation, crisis after crisis treated as unrelated, when the generator is the operating arrangement that produces them as normal output (The Meta Crisis, The Old Operating System, Multi-Polar Traps).

Four corollaries keep it honest. Fighting the symptom is incomplete, not wrong — sometimes a thing must be stopped now, and the mistake is only in calling that the strategy. Upstream work takes time the emergency does not give, so both horizons are held at once, and the discipline is not abandoning the slow work because the fast work is loud (Critical Path, Most Important Things). The generator usually has a generator — the climb is recursive, done one level at a time rather than all at once. And the uncomfortable one: sometimes it is inside you. The dragons a person fights may all trace to something they are carrying, which is why the doctrine turns the seeker around before it lets them declare victory (The True Self, Shame, The Dark Initiate Failure Mode).

It also names an old tactic: keeping the capable busy with symptoms so that nobody ever reaches the source. Exhaustion is a strategy, and refusing to be exhausted is part of the work (Waste, Focused Attention As Discipline, Rest And Regeneration).

That is where the leverage comes from. A small body cannot out-fight a vast arrangement instance by instance; aimed at the generator, the same small body is working at the highest available point.
