The Dark Initiate Failure Mode

How a warrior's path goes wrong — real training, real capacity, and an allegiance that has quietly turned toward the self.

The failure is not the untrained person who does harm. It is the trained one. Someone walks the path, acquires genuine discernment, genuine composure, genuine capacity — and somewhere along the way the strength stops serving what it was vowed to and begins serving the one holding it. Nothing visible changes at first. The skills are the same skills. The vocabulary is the same vocabulary.

Three tells are recognizable in the surrounding canon. Exemption: the rules are understood to apply to the ordinary and not to the initiate, because the initiate sees further. Insulation: witness becomes inconvenient, then avoided, then framed as the sign of small minds; the engagements stop being observed. Appetite: the capacity begins looking for occasions. A guardian who is disappointed when a threat evaporates has already turned.

It is named here so the body can catch it early, which is the whole function of naming a failure mode. The structural answers are the same ones used everywhere else in the field, applied to the person most likely to argue for an exception: engagement under witness, a vow with a stated end, rotation, transparent reasoning, authority revocable by those it serves, and the plain rule that no role carries immunity. Strength drifts, and the drift is never visible from inside — which is why the warrior pair and the warrior circle exist, and why a warrior with no peers is already in the failure.
