Stigmergy
Coordination through traces left in a shared environment: the mark an action leaves prompts the next action, so complex work coheres without planning, control, or anyone talking to anyone.
The mechanism needs no centre, no simultaneous presence, and no mutual awareness. What it needs is a shared medium that holds traces, and feedback that amplifies what works and damps what does not. Termites build mounds this way. So does open source: the commit, the issue, the failing test, the merged patch — each a trace that tells the next contributor where the work is, without a manager telling anyone anything.
The Way runs on this more than it usually says. A The Season Sheet left with a home, a The Circle's Scorecard marked each week, a Decision Records carrying the why, a constraint log with owners and dates, a defect closed where the work will meet it, a contribution recorded and never retracted — each is a trace, legible to people who never met, in a medium everyone shares. What is owed is computed from the record, never remembered. That sentence is a stigmergic design principle.
It is what makes a Body without a centre coordinate at all. Requests, offers, and commitments travel on the card each week, up and down and sideways; that is how a Body allocates itself without anyone allocating. And Minimum standards of interoperability is precisely the discipline of keeping the traces legible across ten thousand tables: the same card shape, the same week, the same numbered lines, numbers that mean the same thing everywhere.
Its limits are honest ones. Traces coordinate; they do not decide meaning, resolve an objection, or comfort anyone. Stigmergy carries the work between the gatherings. The gathering is still the gathering.
