The 204 ReMembering capacities

A numbered index of what a people would have to remember how to do — from how to One, through how to make friends, to how to transcend fear, anxiety and depression.

Two hundred and four lines, each beginning ReMembering How To, in one numbered run. It opens at the metaphysical ceiling — how to One; how to embrace ultimate ineffability and not-knowing; how to navigate an intelligible universe; how to differentiate and align spirit, theology, philosophy, science, theory, principles, practice; how to interexist. Further down it is a town: how to make friends. How to celebrate generosity and enoughness. How to regenerate wounded living systems. How to honour and establish rights and responsibilities. How to facilitate rites of passage. And it closes on the things that actually keep people from living — how to liberate, how to balance on the tip of the needle, how to transcend fear, anxiety and depression.

What makes it worth carrying is not the number but the range. Most attempts to say what a civilisation needs stop at institutions, or stop at inner life, and this one refuses to choose: the same list holds a proposition about the nature of reality and a line about friendship, and treats both as capacities a people either has or has lost. That is the corpus's characteristic move made visible in one artefact (The Great ReMembering, Holarchy, The Architecture Of A Way).

It is also the canon's largest single register of what is not yet written. Sixteen of the two hundred and four have pages, and those hold a few lines of links rather than anything filled to the form the same book proposes. So it is best read as a map of the hole rather than as a body of work — a list that says, with unusual specificity, where the unbuilt parts are (Gaps Not Yet Closed, Patterns Pending Articulation, The Incipient Link).

Read that way it has real use. A body deciding what to work on next has, in this list, two hundred and four named candidates already stated at the level of a capacity rather than a topic — and the ones a Cell could actually take up in a season are mostly near the bottom of the list, not the top (Choose a Quest, Maximum reuse, A Few).
