The dans, and Mastery at 5th Dan
Beyond Black Belt the count is not of years but of Ways: one stripe for each archetypal Way in which Black Belt is held, and Mastery recognized at five.
- 1st Dan — Black Belt held in one archetypal Way

- 4th Dan — in four
- 5th Dan — Mastery — Black Belt held in five archetypal Ways
The stripes sit on Black Belt in the universal Way of the ØNE Body, and each marks a Guild Black Belt attained elsewhere. Higher dans open as further Ways are witnessed beyond the first five; there is no terminal degree.
The whole architecture rests on one claim, and it is the reason this deserves a page of its own: Mastery is multi-domain by design — no Master is recognized in only one Way. A person may be extraordinary in healing and be no Master. The integration is what makes the Master, because the thing being recognized is not a skill but an instrument that can carry force, healing, inquiry, the word and beauty without any of them deforming the others. That is a deliberate refusal of the ordinary shape of expertise, where depth is bought with narrowness, and it is the single hardest thing in the recognition system to actually satisfy.
Two guards travel with it. First, Mastery is a doorway: 5th Dan is the recognition that a person has cultivated the basic capacity to begin more consciously exploring the universe — the Master continues to be a student, and the spiral has no end. Second, the dans are not a ladder to be counted. The person with Black Belt in two Ways and a steady daily practice is often deeper than the person with nominal recognition in five and no practice at all. Counting one's own progress is named in the corpus as one of the places people slip.
