The grandmother test

A surface passes when a grandmother meets no word she has not been handed.

She is not a stand-in for someone slow. She is a stand-in for everyone who is competent, busy, and has not read the book: the neighbour, the newcomer, the person with an hour and no patience for jargon. The test is run by walking her through the first minute of whatever has been built and stopping at the first term that arrives undefined. That term is the defect.

It is load-bearing because it is the only check on a failure that is invisible from inside. Everyone who builds a thing is fluent in it; fluency makes the closed door look like an open one; and the people the door closes out do not file a complaint, they simply stop coming. A test written down, run out loud, and failed publicly is what converts that invisible failure into a fixable one (The vocabulary ladder, A Word on Words).

The honest use of it is to keep failing it. The canon's own big room wrote this test for itself and its own first minute failed it — that is what a working test looks like, and a body whose surfaces always pass has usually stopped running it. What follows a failure is not simplification of the thing but the handing of the word: one line, in the Guide's voice, at the moment the word appears (The Guide's four renderings).

It has a limit worth saying plainly. It governs vocabulary, not depth. The Way goes as high as it goes, and nothing here asks any of it to be made small; the test asks only that the first rung be reachable from the ground. Plain words first, and then as far up as the thing actually goes (Sensing comes before understanding).
