A Word on Words

The chapter spoken once, early, before the Story is told: what was done to our words, and the discipline we keep in answer.

In the Caves the Keepers did not rule by force. They spoke, and the prisoners repeated. The most important words a people has — God, freedom, love, truth, justice, sacred — were the first taken: claimed by one faction and hurled at another, worn hollow, until a word meant to be a bridge became a trigger. Say one of them now and half the room flinches. The chains are made of vocabulary before they are made of anything else, because a people whose words have been confused cannot agree on anything long enough to leave.

So the opposite is done here, on purpose. Every word is a tool: a pointer toward something real, never the thing itself and never an idol. The word water is not water; it is useful precisely because it can travel where the thing cannot. Held that way — lightly, aimed beyond itself — the space between the word and the thing stays open and clean, and in that space people of every tradition and every wound can speak of the most important things again.

Every word is given the first time you meet it, in one line, and linked after, so you can always look again. No one is asked to carry a word they were not handed. There is no fixed number to learn: the words come at the pace the road needs them, a few at the door, more at the table, some at the Gate, a handful in your own Home and in the Room.

And when two of us use a word, we mean the same thing. When we find that we do not, we say so — and we fix the word, not each other. That is not fussiness. It is how a people divided by its words learns to think together again, and a language alive in a million households cannot be uninstalled.
