Endarkenment

The deliberate inverse of enlightenment: capability withheld by design. Not ignorance that happened, but ignorance that was produced and is maintained.

The word exists to mark a distinction a single word usually hides. Ignorance is an absence — nobody got round to teaching it, the knowledge was lost, the conditions were poor. Endarkenment is a presence: an arrangement that produces and sustains the absence, because someone benefits from the absence continuing (Kontrolle, Control Of Information, Manufactured Dependency).

The distinction matters because the two call for entirely different responses. Ignorance is answered by supply — more schools, more books, more access. Endarkenment is not, because the arrangement will absorb the supply and continue; what it calls for is naming the arrangement and building outside it (New Wine Requires New Wineskins, Withdrawal Of Consent, The Institutional Control Inventory).

Its practical consequence in this corpus is a design constraint rather than a grievance. If large numbers of adults cannot read what is written at the level it is written at, then anything that matters must be encoded so that it can be received without that training — in story, image, parable, archetype, spoken word, and practice (Conditions of Acceptance, The vocabulary ladder, Encoding the Seed in Thought, Form, Light, and Geometry, Narrative Lens, The grandmother test).

The source gives literacy figures for the claim and cites no source for them; they are not carried here. The design constraint does not depend on the exact numbers, and the constraint is the useful part (We Do Not Know, Honesty about time).

Its risk is that endarkenment explains too easily. Every shortfall in what people know can be attributed to design, which is comfortable, unfalsifiable, and condescending toward the people it claims to be defending. The word earns its keep only where an arrangement can actually be shown (Discernment, Navigating Towards Truth, Dignity).
