The reciprocal stake and voice in the Whole
The day a person joins a local body they receive a stake and a voice in the whole body too — and the whole holds a seat at their table. Belonging runs both directions, from the very beginning.
Ordinary membership runs one way. You join a chapter and become a constituent of a distant headquarters you may one day petition. Here it runs both ways at once, and from day one.
The voice reaches the Whole. A new member is not a petitioner outside the wider body; they are a sovereign participant in it, with a real say in its shared direction, the moment they sign.
The stake is in the Whole. As value accrues to the wider Commons — the lifetimes of work already woven in — every member shares in it, not only in what their own body happens to generate. The hundredth community does not arrive to an empty table; it inherits a seat at a commons the first ninety-nine have been building. This is what makes joining late a gift rather than a disadvantage, and it is why the early builders' work is not a private asset.
The Whole has a voice in you. The reciprocal of the outward stake is the Seat for the Whole at the local table — not control, carrying no ownership and no override, but a standing question in the room: does this serve the wider Whole, or only us?
The belonging is called dynamic: the stake and the voice grow as the person and the Whole grow together. No one buys in and no one is bought. You hold it because you joined, and the door stays open in both directions — free to enter, free to leave, and what was honestly given is never clawed back.
The reason this is load-bearing rather than generous is that it removes the two ordinary motives for capture at a stroke. There is nothing to accumulate by staying at the centre, because the centre's value is already everyone's; and there is nothing to hold a departing member with, because nothing was ever taken hostage.
