Watershed

A drainage basin — all the land from which water flows to a common outlet. The foundational place-unit, drawn by the water itself.

Every drop that falls within a watershed eventually reaches the same creek, river, lake, or sea. The lines follow ridgelines and divides, never human boundaries, and they nest fractally: a spring's creek inside a tributary inside a river inside a basin. In final analysis the whole of Earth is a single watershed — one closed planetary cycle of rain, river, aquifer, melt, and evaporation, with the ocean as the common outlet.

It is load-bearing because it is the irreducible geographic fact of where you are. Where political lines fail, watersheds do not; the land remembers its drainage even when people forget. That makes the watershed the anchor under every other place-scale: The Sovereign belongs to one by the simple fact of being somewhere, each Circle sits in one, each Community is shaped by its primary one, and each Bioregion is composed of nested ones — often it is the major watershed that gives a Bioregion its character.

In play it is the most available first Quest in the whole of Pillar VI — Sacred Ecology and Living Systems. Know your watershed is the bioregional instruction, and it can be started this week with no money and no permission: its springs, its streams, its tributaries, its main stem, its mouth; what flows into it, what depends on it, what damages it, what restores it. To steward a watershed is one of the most direct forms of place-care a Circle can practise, and the canon carries it as a named Play with the seat for Living Systems Member beside it.

One distinction to keep. A watershed is hydrological, an Ecoregion is biological, and a Bioregion is both plus the people; they are different lenses on the same ground and often align without being the same unit. And the aquifer beneath is a separate body of water with its own shape — the surface and the subsurface must both be known to steward the water of a place.
