Ecoregion

A defined ecological zone — contiguous land sharing climate, dominant vegetation, characteristic species, and ecosystem function — and the federation rung directly above a Community.

An ecoregion is the unit conservation biology already uses: roughly seven hundred fifty to a thousand terrestrial ones across the Earth depending on the classification, with hundreds more in the sea. They nest, from biome-scale units down to fine local ones. Where a Bioregion integrates ecology with the cultures grown from it, an ecoregion is the strictly ecological substrate those cultures grew on.

It carries two roles at once, and that is why it earns a rung of its own. As a place-scale, it is the empirical reality a Bioregion takes shape around: what grows here, what lives here, what the climate does. A coastal Bioregion may stretch across an estuarine ecoregion, a lowland forest, a montane belt, and an alpine zone. As a federation-scale, Community bodies sharing one ecological substrate — one forest belt, one watershed system, one zone — federate here to steward that substrate together, and Ecoregions in turn federate into Bioregions. The ladder: The Sovereign → Circle → The Village → Community → Ecoregion → Bioregion → onward.

It is load-bearing because Regeneration is meaningless without it. Regeneration is not a generic good; it means something different in a temperate rainforest than in a semi-arid grassland, and a Circle that does not know its ecoregion will plant the wrong things with the best intentions. Ecological literacy at this scale is what makes a place-based Quest real work rather than a gesture.

In play, the ecoregion is also the natural scale for the seat that holds standing for the land. Living Systems Member at a Community table speaks for a particular substrate; at the ecoregional federation it speaks for the whole of it, across the Communities that share it. That is the mechanism by which a watershed has a voice in decisions taken by people who all live upstream of somebody.
