The Macrocomplex

Two to twenty million sovereigns — the megacity or megaregion; a federation of Macrolocalities.

Where cities have grown into one another until the boundary between them is a formality, the ladder names the result rather than pretending it away. A Macrocomplex is a metropolitan complex: several Macrolocalities sharing transport, watershed, labour, and air, whether or not any map says so (Levels Of Scale, Watershed).

It is load-bearing chiefly as honesty about where most people now live. A pattern that only worked in villages would be a rural pattern; the claim that the same Cell, card, and rhythm carry a megaregion has to be made at this rung or abandoned (Holofractal Scaling). It is also where the failure modes are largest: concentration of power, anonymity, and dependency all come cheaper here than anywhere below (Centralization Of Power, Manufactured Dependency, Structural Immunity).

Between the Macrolocality and the Ecoregion, the Macrocomplex is the last rung defined by people rather than by ecology; above it the body is organised by the land itself (Ecoregion, Bioregion). At full population the canon estimates some hundreds to a couple of thousand of them worldwide.
