Cross The Threshold
The first Play: stepping beyond the boundary of the Old World into the New.
Crossing the threshold is the move where reading becomes belonging. It is run once, deliberately, and usually with someone present: you receive the Seed, you say what you are choosing, and you begin the first practice. The Playbook names it as the earliest Play of a Sovereign's walk, and composes it from Spirit Precedes Pattern, a voluntary covenant, The Sovereign Path, and the receiving of the Seed.
It is load-bearing because a threshold that is never crossed consciously is crossed unconsciously, and then it can be denied. Saying it — aloud where there is aloud, in writing where the room is written — makes the yes real, makes the withdrawal of it real, and gives the person something to remember on the days the Old World looks easier. It is also where the Game's refusal of coercion is demonstrated rather than claimed: no one is carried who has not chosen to walk, and the gate does not close behind them.
How it is played. Read or hear the Story. Take the Seed. Say what you are stepping out of and what you are stepping toward, in your own words. Make The Pledge if you are ready to name what you will give this season; anchor the first daily practice, because The Daily Way is what keeps the crossing from being a mood. Then the next Plays are ordinary: Form a Cell, Choose a Quest, Enter The Game. Crossing is not an initiation into a rank — nothing above you changes, only the direction you are facing.
