Pain, Perceived Pain, and Change

Nobody changes until the pain they imagine in changing drops below the pain of staying — so there are two levers, and only one of them is the truth about how bad things are.

The observation is ordinary and it explains almost everything about why people and peoples do not move. Change is not chosen by comparing the present with a better future. It is chosen by comparing the pain of staying, which is known and survivable, against the imagined pain of moving, which is unknown and therefore inflated. As long as the second looks larger, nothing happens — regardless of how bad the first actually is, and regardless of how good the destination would be.

Two things follow, and they are the reason this belongs in the Story rather than in the psychology of individuals.

The pain of staying is systematically under-seen. People avert their eyes from present suffering, and almost nobody follows the current trajectory forward to where it arithmetically ends. Part of what a true telling does is simply to make the cost of the present visible — not to frighten, but because a cost nobody looks at cannot enter the comparison at all (Our Story · The Meta Crisis · The Five Collapse Scenarios · Collapse).

The perceived pain of change is systematically over-felt — and it can be lowered honestly. Most of it is not the difficulty of the new thing; it is the fog around it. A concrete plan, a first step small enough to take this week, other people already doing it, and a way back if it fails together remove most of the fear without removing any of the truth (The First Few · Prototype · Possibility Of Reversal · The LIØNSBERG Quick Start Guide · Testimony). This is the whole reason the canon bothers with plans, kits and cards at all: every one of them is a reduction in perceived pain.

The honest edge: the fear is real, and telling someone it is not is both false and useless. What can be said truthfully is that the pain of the present trajectory will be worse. The building is on fire; it is time to move (The Window · Courage · Cross The Threshold).
