Protected and Distorted Narrative

A category rather than a claim: an account whose distortion is actively defended — where the defending, rather than the account, is what marks it.

Stories go wrong by themselves all the time: they simplify, they drift, they get told by people who were not there. That is ordinary, and it corrects itself as people who know better speak up. What this names is different — an account where the correcting is prevented, and where the effort spent on protection is itself the observable (Distortion, Control Of Information, Narrative Lens).

The category's usefulness is that it points at something checkable when the underlying facts are not. Whether a given account is true may be beyond a person's reach; whether it is unusually defended is often not. Disproportionate response to questioning, penalties for raising it, the same phrasing appearing everywhere at once, a question treated as an offence rather than as a question — these are observations about behaviour, not about history (Prevalence Of Deceit And Propaganda, Overton Window, Guardrails Encountered, Ideological Capture).

Its discipline is exactly there and it is easily lost. Defended does not entail false. Some true accounts are defended, sometimes rightly, and the inference from protection to falsehood is the single most common error in this whole register (Discernment, We Do Not Know, Navigating Towards Truth, The smoke test).

So the category is an invitation to look, and nothing more. What it licenses is asking the question in the open and following where the evidence goes; what it does not license is concluding from the protection (Asking Questions, The seven-part UnVeiling form, Apocryphal Corridors).
