Distortion
Misalignment or falsification of pattern, purpose, or truth.
Distortion is the first degree of failure in this Field's vocabulary of misalignment. Alignment is conformity of a system, being, or act with Spirit and Logos; Distortion is that conformity bent out of true; Inversion is the bend carried all the way over into its parasitic opposite. The three form a gradient, not three separate conditions — which matters, because distortion is catchable and inversion mostly is not.
It is load-bearing because most failures are of this kind. Not betrayal, but drift: a purpose subtly reinterpreted, a word worn hollow, a role that quietly stopped rotating, a measure that began as a servant and became the goal. The canon's instruments are aimed squarely at this range. Every Defect Is A Gift catches the small miss. Retrospective and OmniSpection catch the seasonal drift. Decision Records keep the why so a purpose cannot be reinterpreted by forgetting. Term Limits And Rotation and Transparency are structural immunity against the drifts that compound.
The canon's account of language is the sharpest case. In the Caves the most important words a people had were the first taken and worn hollow, until a word meant to be a bridge became a trigger — the chains are made of vocabulary before they are made of anything else. Semantic Capture is that distortion named; A Word on Words is the correction, and it is a practice rather than a warning: every word given once when you meet it, and when two of us find we mean different things, we fix the word, not each other.
In play, distortion is what a Cell is actually looking for when it takes its honest weekly reading.
