Discernment
The capacity to perceive, distinguish, and act on what is true, wise, and aligned — amid complexity and deception.
Discernment is what remains when the rules run out. Rules handle the cases their authors imagined; discernment handles the rest, which is most of life. It is not the same as intelligence, which can be used equally well to see clearly and to rationalize; it is not the same as Wisdom, which is the settled disposition discernment draws on; and it is emphatically not the same as certainty. Its characteristic act is distinguishing — this from that, signal from noise, the true impulse from the one that merely feels urgent.
The canon is careful about where it applies, and the range is wide. Discerning truth from what one was told is true, which is the Story's whole first movement. Discerning between impulses — the trained skill of telling apart what arises from fear, from appetite, from habit, and from something worth following. Discerning benevolent from malevolent intelligences, which is named at the cosmic register and applies just as well to a room. And discerning what is wise now, which is different from what is true in general: not every good move is the next move.
It is trainable, and the training is unglamorous. Slow down before deciding — the loudest impulse is not thereby the truest. Test what is offered rather than accepting or refusing wholesale: if something is lacking, fill it up; if something does not belong, remove it. Notice who benefits from your believing a thing. Take the question to people who have walked further — stalled judgement goes to the elders for counsel, which is what Wise Eldership is for. And keep The one question at hand, because a compass is most useful exactly where the map has run out.
Discernment is also the body's defence. Against Kontrolle, against the false prophet and the captured word, against the plausible thing that is not true. No structure protects a body whose members cannot tell.
