The Beacon

Ten years out: what this place looks like if we succeed across a decade. Vivid, concrete, a little audacious — the far light a body steers its seasons by.

Between the Driver, which says why a body exists and does not change, and this season's Quest, which is what three or seven people will actually finish by the solstice, there is a gap most good intentions fall into. The Beacon closes it. Two to four sentences a visitor could see, hear and feel — children walking to the river to swim in it, the old shop lit again on a Friday night, nobody on this street eating alone — set ten years ahead and written down where everyone can read it.

It works by being the thing Quests are chosen against. A season's few undertakings are not picked because they are good in themselves; they are picked because they visibly move this place toward that light. Everything ladders: Driver, Beacon, the two or three outcomes that would make this a good year, the three to seven Quests of this ninety days. A proposal that serves none of them does not belong on the page, however fine it is.

And it works by holding still. The Beacon stays; the Quests turn over. Each turning of the season closes what is finished, celebrates it, and chooses the next few — and the far light is unchanged, so the turning is a change of work rather than a change of direction. Only at the long annual look is the Beacon itself revisited.

It is local and dated, which is what distinguishes it from a vision of the world. Ten years, this town, these streets. That is not a smaller ambition; it is the scale at which a decade of steady work is actually visible, and at which a person can tell whether it happened.
