Season

About ninety days, from one turning of the sun to the next — the round of the Game, in which a Quest is chosen, walked week by week, and counted.

A season is the span between two turnings. The Game turns four times a year, at the two solstices and the two equinoxes; a season is what lies between two of them, and it is named by the turning that opens it, year and month — 2027·03 names the season that opened at the March turning of 2027. Naming it that way means no hemisphere has to agree with any other about spring or autumn. Most seasons hold thirteen weeks of The Turn; a few hold twelve or fourteen. A season has four faces — plant, grow, harvest, rest.

It is load-bearing because it is the unit of completion. Ninety days is long enough to do something real and short enough to keep it in view: a Quest is chosen for a season, walked, and either finished, continued, or laid down honestly at its end. Everything that gets counted, told, or sent up is counted, told, and sent up at a turning, which means the season is also the unit at which ten thousand tables become one body.

At the turning a Cell adds the things of the season to its ordinary gathering: it counts its season on the Scorecard; it tells its best story; it chooses the next Quest; and it fills the one page that leaves the table, The Season Sheet, and sends it to its Home. Then the wheel turns again. Before the season turns, a mature Cell has passed the Flame. Many make a meal of it. At the season's end the Circle sees itself from above — an OmniSpection, inward, outward, backward, forward, done in community, because retrospection alone is not enough.

At a kitchen table a season is a Quest, thirteen Turns, and one sheet. At a world's scale the shape is unchanged: a home reads its Cells' sheets in an evening, and a home of homes reads theirs, in the same numbers in every language. A Cell counts its own seasons from its first turning; one that begins mid-season plays the weeks that remain.
