The Field (of the Book), and the law of no loss

Open ground kept beyond the last chapter, where whatever is wise, right, true or good and has no home lives — gathered without forcing, held without deadline, findable by all.

Every real gathering leaves gleanings: ideas that belong to the whole and to no section of it, threads whose weave has not appeared yet, fragments of language too alive to discard and too singular to file, and questions worth keeping precisely because nobody can answer them. Tidy systems throw these away, and lose things they cannot get back (Weave, don't delete, Compost, Gaps Not Yet Closed).

The law is the law of no loss. Nothing is planted in rows before its nature is known. Some of what sits here will turn out to be the seed of a chapter, or of a whole new section — which is what makes the architecture itself able to grow rather than being fixed at whatever number it started with. Some will simply live here always, wild and useful, the way a hedgerow feeds a farm without ever being a crop (Patterns Pending Articulation, The Incipient Link, Emergence).

It is tended, not organised: visited whenever anything is gathered, gleaned at each season's turning, its contents linked generously outward into the concepts (Link concepts, not coordinates, Commons-Tending, Season).

The instruction it gives a person is two lines long. If you have found something true that fits nowhere — this is where it goes, so that it is not lost. If you are looking for what the finished sections could not hold — this is where you look (We Have Heard, Keepers' notes).

It is also a discipline against a specific failure. A body under pressure to be coherent will quietly discard whatever does not fit its current shape, and will mistake that discarding for rigour. A standing place for the homeless-but-true is the structural refusal of that, and it costs something: the Field holds material nobody has verified, and holding is not endorsing (We Do Not Know, Provenance, Prune).

Not to be confused with The Field, which is this library's own index of concepts. Same word, two things.
