Compost

The transformation of decay into fertility — death turned deliberately into the ground of the next life.

It is the plainest teaching in the Pillar and the one everybody can run. Put what has finished into a heap, keep it damp and turned, and in months it becomes the richest thing on the property. Nothing is added; what was thrown away becomes what feeds. Every compost pile is an altar in the sense the canon means it: an ordinary object that demonstrates a law.

It is load-bearing because the same move is asked of a body of people at every scale. A failed Quest is composted by a Retrospective — the season's residue turned until it becomes ground for the next. Every Defect Is A Gift is compost stated as a discipline. Disbanding is compost at institutional scale: discrete birth and discrete death, with a body dissolved when its purpose has ended and its people, knowledge, and assets returned to the Commons rather than kept alive in a husk. Hospicing the old world rather than fighting it is compost at civilizational scale. A system that cannot compost its own endings accumulates zombies.

In play the physical practice is a first-season Quest a Cell can finish: a heap, a bin, a food-scrap route from the kitchens of the Circle to the ground of a garden. It builds Air · Water · Soil · Microbiome directly — living soil is made of this and almost nothing else — and it teaches the group Rhythm, because compost cannot be hurried and rewards attention over intensity.

The honest edge: composting requires actually letting the thing die. A body that keeps a finished project on life support, or a person who keeps re-arguing a closed season, has not composted it — they have stored it, and stored decay does not become fertile. That is the discipline the metaphor is really asking for, and it is harder than the heap.
