CBU is the convention that makes a living body possible. Knowledge here is organised through a meta-science that reflects our current best understanding, with the humble acknowledgement that it is partial and incomplete at best. Say what you presently hold. Name it as current. Act on it. Let better evidence correct it.

It does two things that nothing else does. First, it prevents the conflicting stories and certainties of the old world from being imported as absolutes; a claim that must carry the label current best cannot quietly become doctrine. Second, by making We Do Not Know an ordinary sentence, it creates the room for each person to genuinely grapple with what they actually think, in the open, without losing standing for having been wrong.

It is load-bearing as the hinge of the whole architecture: the why is invariant and every how is revisable. That single asymmetry is what lets a pattern improve itself without dissolving, and what makes Continuous Improvement structural rather than aspirational. Nothing here is called canonical or final.

It nests. Beneath the ineffable Reality sits the Understanding, which falls short of it; beneath the Understanding sits the Current Best Articulation, which falls short of the Understanding. Confusing the three is the dogma trap. In play, CBU is what a page's status line declares, what a Proposal is measured against, and what a Retrospective updates — and what lets a player argue with the corpus without leaving the body.
