The named failure mode of the crossing: complaint that turns into longing backward, until a people would rather return to a known captivity than continue into an unknown freedom.

Murmuring is not the same as honest grievance, and the distinction is the whole point. A body that cannot say what is wrong has no way to correct anything; the weekly table is built to surface exactly that. The Long Murmuring is what grievance becomes when it stops being addressed to anyone who could act on it and starts circulating as a mood — persistent, unattributed, nostalgic for an arrangement whose costs have been quietly edited out of memory.
