The Refining Fire (Wisdom's)

The white-hot encounter with Wisdom that burns everything away — and the rising afterward, in which one knows at last who one really is.

The canon's approach to Wisdom is a courtship in five moves, and the fire is what it ends in. First, understand that she is the one initiating — crying out, longing to be rediscovered, beckoning. Second, learn to hear her subtle voice above the noise of the streets and the cacophony at the city gates. Third, whenever you catch a hint of the whisper or a glimpse of the golden thread, turn to it and incline the whole of your being toward it. Fourth, follow the thread toward its Source the way a quest follows treasure, with fervour and the fullness of will. Fifth, cry out — plead for her to disclose the fullness of herself.

And then, the canon says, something terrifying and magical might happen: she might yield, and presence the greatest portion of herself she judges you can hold. The mountains shake. The earth trembles. In the petrified moment when you wonder whether you will perish, her whisper shatters the stillness more beautifully than could have been imagined, and you understand that her voice is the voice of One.

The intensity of that fire is absolute purity at perfect white heat. In an instant it burns away everything without exception; in its presence there is terror, and pain, and the felt sense of death. And then the rising — in which a person realizes who they really are, and weeps the tears that accompany reunion with what they had been seeking through years of dark.

Two things keep the image honest. It is not an ordeal anyone administers; nothing here authorises putting another person through fire (The Refining carries the same guard for the crossing). And the ending is not private: the canon's last line has the risen ones crying out again in the streets — but now, We are an army. What the fire produces is a person returned to the work, not a person removed from it (The Calling).
