Gnosis

Direct apprehension of Truth — inner knowing, through communion with Logos and Spirit, rather than through argument.

Some things are known before they can be argued for. The recognition of a person's character in the first minute; the sense that a room is wrong; the arrival of an answer whole, ahead of the reasoning that later justifies it; the moment something read for the first time is recognized rather than learned. Gnosis is the canon's name for knowing of that kind — not conclusion but apprehension, and it is treated as a legitimate way of knowing rather than a failure of rigour.

The claim is modest and precise, and both halves matter. Direct knowing is real and is not reducible to inference — which is why the Story says a person cannot be reasoned out of the cave but can be shown, and why the arrival of the Seed to someone ready is described as recognition rather than persuasion. And direct knowing is fallible — feelings of certainty are cheap, and every distortion, appetite, and wish can present itself in the same clothes. The canon's own guard is that we have glimpses and inner knowing, and these are not the Old World's claimed certainty about facts that turn out to be lies.

So gnosis is never left on its own. It is paired with Discernment, which tells one knowing from another; with Types Of Knowing, which says plainly that propositional knowledge is one kind among several and not the whole; and with the discipline of holding everything as Current Best Understanding. A knowing that will not be tested is not gnosis but preference; a knowing tested and still standing has earned its place.

Practically, it means a Circle does not require that everything be argued before it counts. What are you sensing that no one has said yet? is a real question and belongs in the weekly reading. What is sensed is then said, held, and checked — because the body sees more than any of its members, and a thing sensed by several is worth more than a thing proved by one.
