Advantage Based Decision Making
Choosing between alternatives by isolating and weighing their advantages — and recording not only what was decided but why, and what was rejected.
The method assumes something honest: no decision is truly objective. Rather than pretending to calculate net differences between advantages and disadvantages, it makes the comparison explicit — lay the real alternatives side by side, name what each is good for, and choose on the importance of those advantages. The best-known form is Choosing by Advantages, inherited from the production systems this Pillar borrows from.
It is load-bearing because Consent-Based Decision-Making answers shall we do this and not which of these. A circle that has only a consent process will serially approve or reject single proposals, which quietly biases it toward whatever was proposed first and loudest. Advantage-based comparison is how a body considers a real set before committing to one.
Its second half matters as much as its first. The record of the decision — what was chosen, why, what the next best alternatives were, and why they were set aside — is what makes learning and continuity possible between seasons and between generations of a body. Graphic records of the comparison are kept as part of the project record; the canon treats this as knowledge, not paperwork.
In play a Cell uses it when a Quest could be pursued three ways, or when a design decision commits the season. The instinct it trains is to write the alternatives down before the discussion, so the comparison is about the options rather than about the people advocating them.
