Attend, Plan, Act, Learn, Improve Cycle
The five-beat form of Element twelve, with attention placed first: before planning, notice what is actually here.
Four of the five beats are the familiar improvement cycle. The distinctive one is the first. Attend — read the situation as it is, not as the last plan assumed it to be; sense what the field is reporting before deciding what to do about it. Plans that begin at plan inherit yesterday's picture and optimize against it.
Plan sets what will be done and by whom, pulled backward from what the work is for. Act does it, at the smallest scale that can act well. Learn reads the gap between what was planned and what happened, without blame, and asks what the gap is teaching. Improve puts the lesson where the next cycle will meet it — in the Card, the check, the set-up — rather than in a memory that will fade.
The fifth beat is what separates this from a loop that merely repeats. Learning that is not embedded is entertainment. A lesson closed only when its fix sits in the place the work will pass through is the discipline that makes the cycle cumulative (Every Defect Is A Gift).
The cycle is fractal, like the Element it expresses: a person can run it between two tasks, a Cell runs it weekly at The Turn, a Quest runs it across a season, and a Body runs it at the turning in OmniSpection. Nothing about the beats changes with scale; only the period does.
It is named in the canon at the root and its page is empty — a title with no body — while the substance lives in Tightly Coupled Learning and Action and in the continuous-learning sections of the Pattern Language.
