OmniSpection

Periodic review in every direction at once — inward, outward, backward, and forward — done in company, because no single vantage can see the whole.

A Retrospective looks back. OmniSpection surveys the whole field: inward to the state of the self and the Circle, outward to the state of the work and the world, backward to what has been learned, forward to what is coming. Its purpose is to consciously update the map being navigated by — from where we are toward where we are going — and, because every individual is finite, it can only be done accurately together. Shared sensemaking is not a nicety of the practice; it is the practice.

It is load-bearing because it is the instrument that keeps a body honest without an inspector. Looking back alone finds errors of execution. Looking in all four directions finds the harder things: drift, capture, ossification, a Quest that is being completed beautifully and should never have been chosen. Canonical works, agreements, and The LIØNSBERG Voice are reviewed against their standards and against reality on the same principle — drift is detected, and drift is corrected. Constitutions and structures anticipate their own failure modes and stay self-correcting the same way.

In play it sits at the seasonal turning, at minimum every solstice and equinox. The rhythm is the same each time: complete the season's Quest and name what remains; celebrate what was actually done, with genuine recognition rather than false praise; name what transformed, visibly and invisibly; retrospect honestly; share the learnings outward to the Commons; choose the next Quest; set clear commitments; and Pass The Flame to whoever is ready. It can be a single gathering of two or three hours with food, or several days woven into a celebration. What matters is that it happens, every Circle, every season.

Four turnings make a year of lived wisdom. A movement of thousands of Circles, each feeding its seasonal learning to the Commons, accumulates understanding faster than any centre could — not stored in a database but embodied in the practices, stories, and relationships of the people building it.
