Monitoring, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement

The standing discipline of collecting what is actually happening, judging it against what was intended, and feeding the answer back into the work — the seeing half of the improvement loop.

Three named acts, and they are not the same act. Monitoring is continuous and cheap: what is being done, what is being kept, what is moving — gathered as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards (The Record · Kept as a share of made · Live log · The Score). Evaluation is periodic and expensive: a judgment about whether what we are doing is working, and whether it is still the right thing to be doing at all (OmniSpection · Retrospective · The gap · Measurement). Improvement is what makes the first two worth doing; without it, monitoring becomes surveillance of one's own body and evaluation becomes a report nobody acts on (Continuous Improvement · Improvement log · Every Defect Is A Gift).

The reason to name them together is that they fail together. Most bodies do one and believe they have done all three: they collect data nobody evaluates, or evaluate without the data to evaluate against, or improve on instinct with neither. The named discipline is the commitment to close the circuit (Attend, Plan, Act, Learn, Improve Cycle · Tightly Coupled Learning and Action).

What it is for is staying aligned while the ground moves. Actions and strategies drift from goals quietly and no amount of sincerity reveals it; a plan that was right when written stops being right, and only the loop notices (Drift · Alignment · The Record as the Movement's variance gauge · Measure everything, manage to the milestones).

Two cautions travel with it. It must not become its own industry — a body can spend more on knowing about itself than on doing anything, and the measures at a table are meant to be few, legible and cheap (Waste · Bottom Line Up Front). And it must never become a single-metric rule: the numbers exist to let a body see, and the deciding is still judgment (Measurement · Wisdom).
