Confidence Intervals on Collapse

State the uncertainty of your own estimate as part of the estimate. The band is what separates calibrated risk-reading from both doomism and denial.

An estimate without a band is a claim pretending to be a measurement. Adding the band — this, give or take that much — says three things at once: what you think, how firmly, and what would count as your having been wrong (Measurement, Hypothesize, Honesty about time).

It is the discipline both failure modes lack, and that is the useful observation. Doomism asserts high certainty of catastrophe; denial asserts high certainty of continuity. Neither states a band, because a band would expose that the confidence is not coming from the evidence (Normalcy Bias and the Familiarity Trap, Discernment, We Do Not Know).

It also changes how the estimate ages. A number with a band can be checked later: reality either fell inside it or did not, and either way the estimator learns something about their own calibration. A bare number cannot be scored, which is why people who never state bands never find out that they are badly calibrated (Improvement log, Retrospective, Every Defect Is A Gift, The Record as the Movement's variance gauge).

And it makes disagreement tractable. Two people with overlapping bands are not actually in conflict and can work together; two with disjoint bands know exactly what they disagree about and can go and look (Transforming Divergence, Meaningful Objection, Navigating Towards Truth, Second reader).

Its own honest limit: a band is itself a judgment, and stating one can lend false precision to a guess. A wide band honestly held is worth more than a narrow one confidently asserted, and the corpus's instruction — honest uncertainty is more useful than false precision — is the right way round (Boundaries and Limits of Conception, Limit Statement, The Five Verification Filters and the Spectrum of Knowing).
