Confront The Monsters Beyond The Boundary

What is not met outside the walls re-forms inside them.

The canon states it plainly: if we do not continually venture out to confront and overcome what waits beyond the boundary, it will continually manifest again inside the walls of our habitable order — and a people that will not face what lies out there does not survive.

The mechanism is the claim, and it is not mystical. A community that has stopped going out does not thereby become safe; it becomes a community whose difficulties now arrive from within. What went unmet at the edge shows up at the centre, wearing local clothes. Whatever a body will not face, it eventually becomes (Boundary, Inversion, The Anti-Patterns).

It reads at two scales at once and the canon intends both. Outwardly: a body that never ventures past what it has already mastered will find its energies turning inward — on its own members, its own rules, its own quarrels (Quest, Wayfaring, Do the Work). Inwardly: what a person refuses to look at in themselves does not stay where it was left; it re-manifests as something inside the order they have made of their life (Discernment, Unlearning, The Refining).

This is the ground under the canon's refusal of safety as an organising principle. If threat cannot be walled out — if the walls in fact produce the thing they were built against — then the only available answer is strength held in common and a body that keeps going out (Strong, Not Safe, Courage, Composure Under Threat).

Two guards keep it from becoming a licence. Confront and overcome is not go looking for something to fight — the wanting is the drift, and it is named as such elsewhere in the same domain (Restraint's Two Tells, The Four Conditions For Destructive Force). And venturing out is done as a body, not as a solitary hero: the whole point of the strength is that it is mutual (Cell, Mutual Aid, The Warrior Pair).
