Courage
Acting in Truth and Love despite fear or opposition.
Courage is not fearlessness. It is the capacity to act well while afraid, which means fear is not its enemy but its occasion: where there is nothing to lose there is nothing to be brave about. It is named among the cardinal values because nearly everything else in the field requires it at some point — telling the truth to someone who will not like it, keeping a promise that has become expensive, standing between someone and harm, saying you were wrong in front of people whose opinion you value.
Most of the courage this way actually demands is small and unwitnessed. Saying I did not do what I said at the weekly table. Naming a harm nobody else has named. Asking for help. Saying We Do Not Know out loud in a room that expects you to know. Refusing an instruction that crosses a line, knowing the cost will be yours. These are not the courage of stories; they are the kind that a body cannot function without, because every one of them is a moment where the easier move is to let the falsehood stand.
Its counterfeit is recklessness, which looks the same from outside and is not. Recklessness discharges fear by acting; courage carries the fear and acts anyway, which is why it is inseparable from Composure Under Threat and from Restraint As The Refusal To Act — sometimes the brave move is the one not made.
Courage is also social. It is far easier to stand when someone stands with you, which is one of the plainer reasons the Game is played at a table rather than alone. A body that makes it safe to say a hard true thing has manufactured courage for everyone in it.
