Unlearning

The intentional removal of falsehood, distortion, and programming that obstructs clarity and growth.

Most of what stops a person learning is not an empty place but an occupied one. The cage is made of knowing-that-is-wrong: inherited certainties about history, about what is possible, about what one is worth, about how people are. New truth arriving at an occupied position does not land; it is filed as an exception, or refused, or bent until it fits what is already there. So the first work is subtraction, and it is harder than addition because nobody experiences a false certainty as a certainty — they experience it as the way things are.

The move that opens it is We Do Not Know. Not scepticism, which is a different cage, and not the collapse in which nothing can be known — the plain admission that what was taught may be false, what was inherited may be distorted, and what was assumed must be re-examined from beneath. As long as a being believes it already knows, it stays where it is. From the admission, the seeing begins.

Unlearning is not only cognitive. It reaches identity ("I am not someone who can do this"), habit, the body's defences, and the patterns laid down by harm. Much of the Wilderness in the Story is this work under another name: old patterns dissolved, Trauma met, identity reformed, trust rebuilt. It is uncomfortable and it takes time, which is why a body that asks people to unlearn owes them safety while they do it — Zero Blame Environment, a Circle that holds, and no requirement to have arrived.

What makes it survivable is that the ground is not empty while the floor is lifted. Current Best Understanding gives a way of holding beliefs that can be set down without collapse: this is the best we can say today, held openly, expected to change. A being that holds everything that way has very little to unlearn, because it never over-committed in the first place.
