Interface
The surface where two systems meet and exchange — the place where design decides what may pass and what may not.
Every boundary that is not sealed has an interface: the relational surface between beings, systems, objects, or environments through which exchange occurs. It is never neutral. What an interface makes easy will happen often; what it makes hard will happen rarely; what it makes invisible will happen without anyone deciding. So the interface, not the intention behind it, is what actually governs the exchange.
This is why interfaces are designed here rather than inherited. The living form of the idea is the Selectively Permeable Membrane: a conscious boundary that filters what crosses while honouring the sovereignty on both sides — consent at the door, and the freedom to leave. What crosses a membrane between bodies is deliberately narrow: requests, offers, and commitments, never a task assigned across a line by someone with no standing to assign it.
In making, the interface is where systems fail. The handoff between one person's work and the next is the weak seam of every project, so the discipline is to define quality at the handoff: the one who will receive the work writes what makes it acceptable before the work begins, and the one doing it checks against that before passing it on. The successor is the customer.
At the technical layer the same principle produces Interoperability: agree the seams, leave everything inside them free. Interface contracts, not code cloning — which is how a pattern can be recognized and used by a body that shares none of your language, tools, or assumptions.
