Design

The intentional shaping of any created thing — space, object, system, agreement — into alignment with the Logos.

Design is the act between intention and matter. It is where the Creative Cascade turns: an Intention becomes an Ideal, an ideal becomes an Archetype definite enough to build, and design is what makes that archetype buildable here, with these materials, these people, this ground. Every design decision either aligns with the Logos or distorts it; there is no decision that does neither.

Whole-systems design is the posture: consider all the components and their interrelationships, look for the synergies and the leverage points, and optimize the whole rather than the parts. A design that perfects one component while degrading the system has not solved anything; it has relocated the problem to whoever is downstream.

Two disciplines govern how it is done. Design To The Goal makes the Goal the binding constraint rather than the budget or the politics: target quality is not lowered, and cost flexes through invention. Set-Based Design keeps several viable options alive and narrows at the last responsible moment, which costs more early and far less in total than committing while you are still ignorant.

And design extends past the physical. The Field of Agreements is a design. The Season Sheet and its fourteen numbered lines are a design — numbered so that the numbers mean the same thing in any language. The Turn is a design. Each was shaped so that using it correctly is easier than using it badly, which is the only reliable form of a rule: build the thing so the right move is the natural one, and you will not need to enforce much.
