Spacetime User Interface

The reading of perceived reality as an interface rather than as the thing itself — useful, faithful enough to act on, and not the underlying truth.

An interface is not a lie. The icons on a screen are not the machine, and nobody is deceived by them; they are a compressed, actionable presentation of something far more complicated, shaped by what the user needs to be able to do. The proposal here is that space, time, objects, and separateness may be that: a presentation fitted to an organism that had to survive, rather than a picture of what is (Reality, Consciousness, Interface).

It is held as a reading, not a finding. It sits in a live and unsettled conversation — in physics, in the study of perception, and in contemplative traditions that reached similar conclusions by other means — and the canon's honest position is that the question is open (Epistemology, Boundary of Knowing, We Do Not Know, Science).

What it does, held carefully, is loosen the grip of a particular kind of certainty: that what is obviously so, is finally so. The usefulness of the interface is exactly why it is convincing; a presentation that did not work would have been discarded long ago. So the fact that something feels self-evidently real is evidence that the interface is good, and not evidence about what is behind it (The Veil of Finitude and Forgetting, Types Of Knowing, Mystery).

It carries two warnings, and the second is the serious one. A thing may be an interface and still be binding: hunger, pain, and a promise made to a neighbour do not become optional because the screen is a screen. And the reading is easily conscripted into dismissing the world, the body, and other people's suffering, which is the exact inversion of everything else here — the Way is embodied, local, and practical, and any metaphysics that makes a person less present at the table has been misused (Embodiment, Immanence, Heaven On Earth, Dignity).
