Kairos
The opportune moment — time measured by ripeness rather than by duration, where purpose, possibility, and preparedness intersect and a move can change what follows.
From the Greek καιρός, the right measure or the crucial moment: the face of time that cannot be counted. A kairos moment is recognized rather than scheduled. It is immediate, it is fleeting, and once it has passed it does not return in the same form. Its three characteristic marks are that it demands recognition, that acting in it moves more than the effort should account for, and that not acting in it is itself a decision with consequences.
It is load-bearing because the whole enterprise rests on a claim about timing. The Moment — one world dying while another is born, the two being one event — is a kairos claim, not a chronos one: not we have until 2030 but this is the window in which this particular move is possible. If we fail to take the opportunity in this window, it is not obvious that it remains open in future decades or generations. That is the entire argument for urgency, and it is a qualitative argument.
In the Game, kairos is what the compass question is for. Before every move: does this make life a little more like Heaven? — and when two moves both do, the older players ask the second question, whether this is the highest thing we could do right now, for ourselves and for the whole. Not every good move is the next move; discerning which is the next move is reading kairos. It also shows in the small things: spontaneous wise right action, the word said at the moment it lands, the lesson delivered just in time rather than handed over at the door.
Kairos is always available, on this reading, to anyone who will perceive and move within it. Now is kairos if we choose to see it that way — which makes the discipline a matter of attention rather than of luck, and pairs it with the preparation that Chronos provides. Structure creates the conditions in which the moment can be seen and taken.
